Kirkwood Atlanta Real Estate

It is bordered by DeKalb Avenue on the north, 1st Avenue on the east, Memorial Drive and Interstate 20 on the south, and Montgomery Street on the west. Two MARTA stations provide great transportation options.

Neighborhood Overview

Most of the architecture in Kirkwood showcases traditional Victorian and Craftsman Bungalow styles with a few contemporary homes and lofts. Home styles lend down-to-earth functionality and simplicity. The Median Home Price in the affordable neighborhood is under $250,000.

Newer homes tend to happily blend into the historic streetscapes, helping to maintain the rich heritage of Atlanta. Today, small enclaves have been filling in the community. Hawthorne Park is one of these projects that offer modern homes with a vintage appeal.

 

Neighborhood Amenities

Downtown Kirkland offers small-town amenities including a post office, fire station, police precinct, and public library. Shopping, dining, and professional offices share the downtown buzz. Local businesses and events in Kirkwood are represented by an organization.

Kirkwood Neighborhood Organization (KNO) established the Kirkwood Historic District, the largest in the state of Georgia. KNO organizes special events and represents the neighborhood to the larger community. Community events fill the calendar. Signature events include Kirkwood Spring Fling Festival and Tour of Homes, Kirkwood Wine Stroll, Kirkwood Family Find, Kirkwood Home for the Holidays and the annual B*ATL event. It commemorates the Battle of Atlanta with a gala dinner, reenactments, and family activities.

Five of Atlanta’s public parks and the Eastside Greenway prompt numerous outdoor activities. In addition, the PATH created from the old trolley line crosses town. Park facilities include recreation centers, ballfields and special features. The Urban Treehouse, Kirkwood Urban Forest, and Community Garden bring nature into the inner city.

Neighborhood History

Kirkwood was named after prominent landowners in the area, the Kirkpatrick, Dunwoody, and Clay families. They grew crops and operated dairy farms and benefited from the streetcar system. During the 1870s, some beautiful suburban villas sprang up and in 1899 the city Incorporated. The former Kirkwood School, now filled with loft homes stands in its classic design. Five historic markers pertain to the Battle of Atlanta, which began in Kirkwood.

 

Neighborhood Schools

Residents are served by Atlanta Public Schools. The district operates Fred A. Toomer Elementary School, Charles Drew Charter School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, and Maynard H. Jackson High School.
